Elders of Coffs Harbour area include two registered groups, Gumbular Julipi and Garby Elders from the north.
Most elders come under the Gumbayngirr nation banner.
The Gumbular Julipi elders have a meeting once a month at the land council office.
They deal with social and cultural issues in the community. They give their advice and guidance.
They attend a language class one a week with brother Steve Morelli. They are learning the Gumbayngirr language.
They also hold knowledge gathering workshops.
Services they offer include
- 'Welcome to Country' speeches
- story telling tells days
- talks to groups such as schools and national parks.
The elders also perform smoking ceremonies on very special occasions.
The elders are concerned with preserving aboriginal cultural and heritage, and passing knowledge onto the children
for future generations.
